Dhul-Hijjah didn’t begin with The Prophet ﷺ and his companions. It stretches much further back, reaching into the depths of Islamic history. Prophet Abraham and his son embodied the spirit of sacrifice that defines Eid Al-Adha, prophet Moses fasted the 10 days of Dhul-Hijjah… there’s a great deal more to this month than meets the eye.

Daily dhikr
The prayer of Moses after losing it all: It’s a good one to keep in mind for all situations in your life. We are always in need of whatever good God bestows upon us.
My Lord, indeed I am in utmost need of whatever good you would send down upon me.
[ Surat Al-Qasas, verse 24 ]
Daily deed
One of Prophet Musa’s (peace be upon him) strongest traits was his love of helping people and countering injustice. When he saw a group of young women unable to water their flock of sheep, he didn’t hesitate to assist them despite his own exhaustion at just having completed a long journey. His prophethood was focused on liberating people from an unjust situation. Similarly, we should be looking for every opportunity in our own lives to be helpful, whether that means volunteering for a local mosque, environmental group, or homeless shelter, or putting our skills to use to change larger systems of injustice we see in the world.

Islam has a rich historical legacy of contributing to scholarly knowledge and participating in societal discourse. Although that tradition has fallen by the wayside recently, it’s one we should strive to revitalize, especially at a time when Muslims are confronting complex topics such as abortion, women’s rights , jihad, secularism, Islamophobia, and more. Yaqeen is working to address these topics head on to empower our communities. If you’d like to help revive a historical legacy, contributing to Yaqeen is a great way to start. Donate to help us produce more relevant content.
